EMS. MORE THAN A JOB. A CALLING TO SERVE OTHERS.

We Remember
In EMS we become a family, a team, and much more. Crew members spend numerous hours together working as volunteer EMTs and EMRs to serve the public. They develop a deep bond that lasts a lifetime and answering the call that most would not in the middle of the night, the middle of a family gathering, the middle of a football game, and so much more. Our crew members sacrifice countless hours to help and give back to the community to save lives and be there in the worst and the best times for community members.
We remember is a tribute to our crew members and those who have been called home from their time here on this earth. We as a crew remember their sacrifice and dedication to serving others and continue to work forward in those values.
Ness County EMS gives Thanks for all of our crew members, families, friends and neighbors in Ness County. We especially give Thanks to the following families that have given a memorial donation since November of 2022.
Ness County EMS would like to honor a member of our crew. As we share our memories, we also want to recognize all EMS volunteers who give so much of their lives in service to their communities.
On August 12, 2023, we lost one of our valued crew members Dee Von Bauer. Dee had been a team member of Ness County EMS for over 23 years. She began her EMS journey as a student in one of our local classes and within 6 months became a valued EMT for our community. Her passion was her husband, children, her grandchildren, and EMS. Dee was the epitome of being a volunteer. She worked at a time when EMS in our community was for very little pay and very little recognition. She gave up countless hours with her family and sacrificed other interests in order to respond in a moment’s notice to emergencies.
It was well known on our service that Dee would wake up early to make sure she was showered and ready for volunteering by 6 am every morning for call. Dee was passionate about EMS and encouraged others to join EMS. Approximately 2 years ago, Dee began to have physical problems that prevented her from being able to respond to calls. She was granted a leave of absence and began a valiant battle fighting cancer. She remained a part of our service until her passing. It was fitting that Dee’s last ride in this life was in the ambulance. During this ride, she expressed how much she missed EMS and couldn’t wait to be on call again.
Dee was devoted to her husband, her parents, her children, and her grandchildren. She was looking forward to her new grandson’s birth. Two days after Dees passing her new grandson was born. In tribute to Dee’s love for her grandchildren and EMS.
If you’ve ever had any encounter with Ness County EMS you would probably remember one young woman with bright red hair and a big smile. That was our Dee. It was Ness County EMS’s privilege to honor Dee at her service as she embarked on her “Last Call.” Pager 683 sounded for Dee to respond as our crew and our community stood in silent tribute to honor our beloved Dee.
Ness County EMS would like to give thanks to all EMS personnel who have shared their life as Dee has. Being part of the EMS “family” is so amazing- we share a passion for serving others. The best of humanity lives when we sacrifice time to respond to a call. The passion for EMS in rural Kansas lives and is shared by each of us. We recognize and cherish our families that support and encourage family members who serve in EMS.

Janice Marie Pfannenstiel
July 31, 1950 - January 19, 2024
Ness County EMS recently received a donation in memory of Janice Marie Pfannenstiel. Our EMS family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Janice’s family for remembering Ness County EMS and are honored to be recognized with her memorial.
Janice was born July 31, 1950 and baptized at Scared Heart Catholic Church in Ness City. She attended Scared Heart School of Ness City and was a graduate of the NCH Class of 1968. Janice received an associate degree from Dodge City Community College and was employed by the State of Kansas Employment Division in Dodge City. Following retirement, Janice returned to Ness City and was well known for her “retirement” employment at Ralph’s, the Mini-Mart, and the Ness County News. Janice was always ready to help others and always greeted those around her with a smile and an offer to help.
Her life centered around her Faith and her family. She was always there for her younger siblings JoAnne and Joe. The family was very close throughout childhood and adult years and family values were centered on strong Catholic beliefs and devotion. She was a devoted, loving aunt to her nieces and nephews.
Janice exemplified the commandment “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” One of Janice’s acts of kindness and love that many of us witnessed and admired was her self-less devotion to helping others. She was devoted to serving her Church family and had a number of people in the Ness County area who counted on her for errands and daily assistance. Janice prepared meals, ran errands, offered a kind touch, and listened when others needed to talk. Her daily actions bore witness that her mission in life was to serve others. Janice lived her life fulfilling that mission.
Janice passed from this life on January 19, 2024. She was a beacon shining with God’s love for each of us. Her love, devotion, and kindness will be greatly missed and will be remembered.
